Changed from the original 4-beat-to-a-bar time, the arrangement is in
3 time, resulting in a lilting style which particularly highlights the
well-known, lovely melody. Beginning gently with restrained
resources, the piece grows to a powerful climax which includes a
soaring descant for solo trumpet.
Included as an optional opening to the music, is a setting of the
traditional It came upon the midnight clear for brass quartet or octet.
